This setup illustrates the principle of coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP) for a coherent 112Gb/s QPSK signal. The system performance is limited by noise (added in front of the receiver), chromatic dispersion and PMD (taking place in the fiber), as well as by cross-talk between channels (resulting from the misalignment between the polarization states of the channels and the polarization beam splitter in the polarization diversity receiver).
