Health parameters like heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) have been captured using conventional methods which give good signals. Also, there have been recent advances in photoplethysmographic imaging which has made it possible to capture these parameters in a non-invasive, low-cost and comfortable way. All of these new techniques have been implemented in languages other than C. C language is well known for serving portability on systems of different architectures. In this paper, we will discuss these techniques from the perspective of implementation in C for the extraction of health information and will suggest improvements that can be applied to it.
